Ugly Sweater Chic

Holiday sweater parties are a huge thing around campus and just in general! But, how can you achieve a tacky chic look? Well, when dressing for a holiday party you add a touch of glamour to your look. Add sequin shorts, bold jewelry, or a fun clutch to keep your look classy. But, to add some fun to your look add a fun hair accessory or a pair of holiday socks.

This past weekend was jam packed with ugly sweater parties. So here is two ways that I styled my ugly sweater!

The first way I styled my sweater vest was with a fun Christmas long sleeve and jeans. Then the second way I styled it was with a sequin tank, skirt, and red knee socks. I also included a fun Christmas tree necklace in each look. To accessorize I wore a Christmas tree headband as well as a fun little red hair bow.

How are you going to style your ugly sweater? Let me know in the comments!

How to style plaid scarves for winter!

It's officially December! Which means it's time to bundle up and keep out of the cold. Plaid scarves have been in a ton of my posts recently and to say the least I'm obsessed. There are a ton of ways you can style and wear a plaid scarf. Here are a few ways I've styled them recently.....

  1. Shorts, tights, and a long sleeve: For a fun holiday party look pair your scarf with tights and a cute pair of shorts!
  2. Dress, denim shirt, and tights: If your seeking a mix between casual and dressy this look is for you. Layer a denim shirt, sleeveless dress, and a plaid scarf for a fabulous layered look.
  3. Sweater, button down, jeans: This look is great for running around campus or town. It's simple but still has interest with the layering.
  4. Long sleeve and jeans: A comfortable look sometimes is a necessity. To dress down a plaid scarf pair it with a simple long sleeve and jeans. Don't be afraid to mix prints. Plaids and stripes are always a cute combo.

What is your favorite way to wear a plaid scarf? Let me know in the comments!

OOTN: Trend Magazine Release Party

It's official! The fall issue of Trend magazine has been release and is on shelves across Iowa State's campus. Trend magazine is a student run publication that I am involved with on campus. For this past semester I served as a director for the accessories photo shoot. For the shoot my committee members and I decided on a theme, the clothes, and most importantly the accessories! I am so happy with the results and so proud of the hard work my committee has put in. Not to mention our shoot was chosen to be on the cover of the magazine!

Be sure to check out Trend's Facebook page!

Every year the magazine puts on the a release party to introduce the magazine. So, here is what I wore for the special occasion.....

For the event I wore a recent purchase of mine! I picked up this fabulous romper from Topshop while I was home over break. (Check out my posts from break here!) This romper is a great holiday piece and I'm sure I will find another great occasion to wear it soon. Wearing rompers in the winter with tights is a great way to maximize the wear of a more summery item!

I paired the romper with black fishnet tights, awesome metallic heels, and bold statement earrings. I wanted to keep my accessories simple because the main show piece of this look is the back of the romper.

My favorite part of this romper is the back. It's absolutely gorgeous! Normally I am not a big fan of open backs on me but I couldn't resist this one. The lace detail adds a touch of elegance and glamour to the otherwise simple look. I paired the romper with the fishnet tight because it looked very similar to the back detail.

The venue for the event was fabulous! It was at Reiman Gardens in Ames which has gorgeous gardens everywhere. We took pictures in the garden room that was filled with fragrant flowers and festive Christmas trees.

Can we talk about these awesome heels? I love the pink metallic straps as well as the print on the back.

OOTD: Cargo Cool

For a day of classes I have been drawn to pants more and more. With the temperature dropping wearing tights and dresses is getting less appealing (which is super depressing). So, I have resorted to wearing cute utility pants like these navy pants from J Crew. I paired these cool pants with a simple striped top. Overtop I wore an army green military vest. The overall look was super cool but still my preppy style.

For accessories I wore one of my favorite pair of statement earrings. This pair is great because it has a lot of colors that I wear on a regular basis. You can never go wrong with a great statement earring! My favorite place to get statement earrings is Baublebar or J Crew. They have great options and if you keep your eye out you can usually score them on sale! Then I tied in the navy and green in my outfit with my Sperry Topsider watch.

How to layer like a champ

Old Navy sweater | Ralph Lauren Polo shirt | J Crew necklace

As many of you may know, I am obsessed with layering. Almost every look I wear in the fall or winter I incorporate some type of layering. Sometimes it can be hard to figure out what pieces are good to layer. So, I created a go-to guide of how I like to layer pieces.

  • Sweater and collared shirt: Whether it is a graphic sweater or a chunky knit I usually ALWAYS put a collared shirt underneath. This creates a fun pop because you can peak your collar over your sweater. Not to mention it creates the perfect stage for an awesome statement necklace. Check out this recent post where I layer a sweater and a denim shirt!
  • Long sleeve and a vest: This is a classic combination. Vests are a huge trend this season and I am loving it! Normally I pair my vest with a denim button down or a simple long sleeve shirt. This way you can stay warm and look fashionable. Check out this post all about vests!
  • Dress and a collared shirt: Layering a dress may seem a little weird but I promise it looks adorable! I love doing this because you can make a dress normally made for the summer or spring more winter appropriate. Check out this OOTD post to see how I did it!

Those are my 3 go-to layered looks! What are your favorite ways to layer? Let me know in the comments!

How to style The Periwinkle Co. bows!

I am currently a campus rep for The Periwinkle Co! The Periwinkle Co. is a line of hair bows and bow ties that are too adorable for words! Their newest collection is pure perfection. My favorite from the collection is this adorable plaid bow. I wear it al the time because it goes great with a lot of my fall pieces. Here are a few ways I like to wear them:

Half up: Pin your hair back with a few bobby pins then stick the bow on top. Its the perfect way to showcase your adorable The Periwinkle Co. bow!
Behind a bun: Another favorite way to wear my Periwinkle Co. bows is to put them behind a bun. Simply put your hair in a donut bun and stick the bow right below it in the back. Its a great way to add a little girly touch to your look.
To the side: Make an adorable bow your side kick! Simply pin back your bangs or hair in the front near your ear then place your bow over it. I love doing this with my seersucker bow for game day. This way you can sport your school colors while looking adorable!

OOTD: Thanksgiving Round 2

This past saturday I had another family Thanksgiving party. For my outfit I wanted to keep things more casual due to it being a smaller gathering.

So, for a casual holiday look I turned to my black fur vest. These fur vests are a huge trend this season. Not only are they warm but they add great texture to any outfit. These vests can be found in practically any store and I highly suggest investing in one! I got this vest at American Eagle last season and it has come in handy for this year. From black, brown, to tan any color vest is a great neutral to add to any winter look.

With my vest I wore a bright green long sleeve to add some color. Then I threw on a comfortable pair of leggings.

To spice up my look I added a bunch of great accessories. My boots are a personal favorite. Whenever I am home I always take advantage of my Mom's shoe collection. These ankle booties are super cute and a little edgy. I wore a pair of sparkly silver socks to add a little something extra. Then I wore a bold jewel statement necklace from C Wonder to add an extra touch of black to the look. As usual, I also wore my favorite bangles of the moment.

Accessories of the day! Check out this photo and my other pictures on my Instagram!
